Alex was born in London, UK to Chinese parents from mainland China. Having wanted to be a film maker since the age of 11, Alex started writing and shooting his own films since he was 13 years old. He studied film production at the University for the Creative Arts in the UK and studied cinematography, film editing, writing, producing and directing.
With his technical knowledge of the camera and passion for writing and directing, Alex directed several short films in university. After graduating, he then wrote, produced and directed a 30 minute short film in 2012. He showcased this short film at the Cannes film festival in 2012.
Since then Alex has been writing and developing several projects. One of them is a film about American blues and jazz music, which has some scenes set in China and he hopes to shoot and direct this in both America and China, with American and Chinese actors in the lead roles. He believes that this film can become a bridge for both cultures and can influence a generation to understand and appreciate blues music. Being Chinese but born in the West, he believes he has an understanding of both worlds and can bring a unique vision to films that is missing in both the West and Asia. His upbringing in London also influences his storytelling as he grew up in a multicultural London, surrounded by different parts of the world at his doorstep.
Alex is also writing and developing 3 TV show projects, each one a different genre and enjoys the world-building creative process for his film and TV projects.
Alex has experience shooting on 16mm film, digital cameras and has had training workshops for working on 35mm motion picture filmstock. He is also self-taught in using editing software (Avid) and has also cut on film before. He speaks Cantonese and English and is currently learning Mandarin and Spanish.
